Salt of life

Vitae sal amicitia

Friendship, salt of life

 Post 199_E
English Edition
Salt is the seasoning that gives flavor to food, in parallel, life would have no taste without friendship, the seasoning of life.

Today we find  salt  in abundance and its price is irrelevant, but in antiquity it was a rare and valuable commodity. The word salary is derived from the Latin salarium - value paid to soldiers for the purchase of salt.

Me and Caio celebrated our friendship by salting the popcorn we were eating:
Friendship is the SALT (seasoning) of Life
In the picture below, I'm playing football with Caio - friends turn simple moments into precious ones - vitae sal amicitia:
Passing the foot over the ball trying a magical dribble!

Sal da vida II

Vitae sal amicitia

Amizade, o sal da vida

 Post 199

Staing at home is safe

Domi manere tutum

Staing at home is safe

 Post 198_E
English Edition
It is now very dangerous to walk the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Mom always goes in the back seat of the car next to me, so she can quickly get me out of the car in the event of an accident or robbery.

Daddy avoids leaving home at  night , because the risks are even greater... Staying at home is safe - domi manere tutum. Our little house is our refuge, that cozy place where we feel protected.

However, we can not allow our refuge to become a prison or monastery isolating us from the world. At weekends Daddy takes me for a walk in the safety of a park or a mall where I meet my little friends from nursery. I'm growing up and I have to interact with others... 👶
Our little house gives us a sense of security and warmth.
A house is a delimited space, intended for habitation. It's what children draw, that's what billboards advertise - house is an object.
A home is much more than a house. A home is a humanized house, particularized, full of meaning and history.

Dad remembers that as a child his family moved constantly from house to house, but home remained practically the same.

In an earlier post we saw the term domus used as house. But Latin is a language that has declensions (words vary according to their syntactic function). Domi is the locative form (place where action occurs): domi means at home.

A segurança do Lar

Domi manere tutum

Ficar em casa é seguro

 Post 198

Estou crescendo e preciso me socializar... 👶

Honey, I'm home!

Honey, I'm home

 Post 197_E
English Edition
Honey, I'm home!  What Earl happily shouts as he burst through the door after work at the beginning of each episode of Dinosaurs, a TV show of the early 90's that made a humorous satire of middle-class society.

Daddy remembers his and his nine brother's joy when they heard the noise of Grandpa Izaias's car arriving. They ran to open the garage door screaming: Daddy arrived, Daddy arrived...

Coming home after a day's work is comforting, although many still face a second working shift.😟

Today's photo was taken at the Roselanches restaurant (Barbacena-MG) - mommy acted with me on that stage. We were on our way to aunt Teresinha's country house, where we spent the holiday of  Setember 7th ( Brazilian Independence Day ).

What a pity, we could not use the swimming pool. The water was too cold...

Querida, cheguei!

Querida, cheguei

 Post 197

Upa, upa, cavalinho! A mamãe ficou apavorada!

Perdoar-se

Egomet mi ignosco

Eu mesmo me perdôo

 Post 196

Self-Forgiveness

Egomet mi ignosco

I myself pardon myself

 Post 196_E
English Edition
Egomet mi ignosco - I myself pardon myself, this is a quotation from Horace (in Satires 1.3.23), a philosopher and one of the greatest poets of ancient Rome.

In the photo, forgive myself for pulling the towel off the table and breaking a cup as the breakfast dishes fell on the floor.
Oh, but do not worry! It was all Daddy's simulation to produce the photo for today's post.
To forgive or not to forgive... Egomet mi ignosco

My daddy told me that as a child he was very astonished to know that babies were already born carrying an immense guilt: such an ancestral sin committed by a guy named Adam. He later discovered that one of the pillars of our civilization is guilt, a harmful feeling that leads to suffering. But he learned to forgive himself and overcame that negative charge.
Fortunately, I was born in other times and I am being educated for responsibility and self awareness, free from so much guilt.

Labor Day

Enzo celebrating Labor Day

In sudore vultus tui vesceris pane

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread

Labor Day in the USA is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country.
Labor Day is celebrated in  Brazil  and in several countries on May 1stIn  Brazil , it was only on September 26, 1924 that this date became official, after a decree of the then President Arthur Bernardes.

In sudore vultus tui vesceris pane - you will gain bread with the sweat of your face – it's in the Vulgate (translation of the Bible into Latin), in Genesis 3:19. That's the punishment imposed on men by God after expelling Adam and Eve from Paradise for having disobeyed His will. Thus, work is attributed to an aspect of sacrifice, punishment, and reparation.

GUSTAVE DORE  (1861) - Adam and Eve Driven Out of Eden
Trabalho, the Portuguese word to Labor, comes from the Latin tri-paliu, which is the denomination of a torture instrument consisting of ‘three stakes’ (paliu, paus in Portuguese). In this way, originally working meant being tortured.

Tripaliutorture instrument
In antiquity the nobles and the rich did not work, an activity that was considered as the attribution of poor or slaves and servants (those who could not pay debts or those defeated in wars). From the industrial revolution the workers acquired rights and better conditions of work - the philosophy of the necessary and dignifying work was created.
Even so, labor remains an ambiguous reality: hated, on the one hand, as something that has to be endured and which continues to be seen as a punishment, but valued, on the other hand, as a fundamental element in people's lives, being the main source of well-being, prosperity and tranquility.

Entre amigos

Amicis aequa ibit hora

Entre amigos, as horas voam

 Post 195

Among friends, time passes without being noticed. Playing quietly with Caio, my friend from the nursery, I did not even know how time passed so fast.
In the previous post, I was in a dispute with Lucca which is very competitive. I understand myself better with Caio, who is calmer, but it is good to have friends of different temperament.

Discórdia

Fratrum concordia rara

O entendimento entre irmãos é raro

 Post 194

"A palavra latina con-cordia significa corações-juntos.

Disagreement

Fratrum concordia rara

Agreement among brothers is rare

 Post 194_E
English Edition
I have two brothers, Max and Rafael, but they are adults and they do not live with me. So it's like I'm an only son. Here at home I have no brothers to fight for toys or to dispute some privilege. Oh, but there in the nursery or when I'm with my cousins we're always fighting.

Daddy told me that he and his nine brothers lived togheter and that the fight was big - it looked like a gang warfare. Imagine, just one TV set to suit so many different interests! Thankfully the number of channels were few at the time. Now things have changed so much that there are more TVs than locals in the house. 😉

The full quote for today isfratrum concordia rara, discrepatio crebra - Agreement among brothers is rarediscord is frequent. And, of course, this applies beyond kinship, and may also refer to disputes between members of the same social group, among compatriots, or even soldiers on the battlefield, as in cases of friendly fire.

Below there is a summary of Aunt
Laura Gibbs' explanation of today's theme:

"
The Latin word con-cordia means together-hearts in English. The heart, cor, was not just a seat of sentiment and emotion in Latin, as it is for us ("sweethearts," "heartfelt," etc.), but was also a seat of intelligence and thought. So when there is concordia in Latin, it means people's minds are operating in unison, that they share the same thoughts and intentions, the same hearts."

Total Health

Absque sanitate nemo felix

Without good health, no one is happy

 Post 193
Englih version
Daddy uses to say that you don't value your health until you are sick. Really, health is one of the most precious  commodities and we often don't pay enough attention to it.

In today's picture, I am doing inhalation with aerolin, a medication for treatment of the respiratory tract, but do not worry, it's nothing serious - just things that every child goes through in the cold of winter.

Below there is a summary of Aunt Laura Gibbs' explanation of today's theme:

"The Latin noun sanitas is based on the adjectival root, sanus, meaning healthy. In English, these words evolved into sanity, sanatorium, and sane which are employed in the field of mental health.

In Latin, sanitas could also refer to mental health, of course. However, it is very interesting how sanity has practically become the exclusive meaning of the word in English. I suppose that this has to do with the fact that the Germanic word health occupied the space devoted to physical healthiness in English, so the word sanity  had to specialize if it wanted to play a vital part in English vocabulary. "
